It rained most of today, but that didn't keep us inside. After waking to sunny morning, the rain quickly moved in so we headed to the mountains. Less than a mile above our apartment is a trail through Gold Creek Canyon. We hiked about 6 miles through the Canyon, which is where the first road built in Juneau is located. The canyon winds its was between Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts. We started up Perseverance Trail and then finished the trail in snow shoes. Neither one of us had ever snowshoed before, but I was a much quicker study than Joel. For some reason he had a difficult time coordinating balance and walking. We still cannot believe the variety of what we see here. On the hike we went through the deciduous rain forest, over several waterfalls, and through snow-packed meadows. Amazing!

ReplyDeleteYou know, the whole purpose of me coming is so I can finally see a bear up close and personal. In my mind it is always a peaceful encounter, but when we were hiking yesterday and we got above the falls and were the only folks out there in snow shoes, the idea of seeing a bear became quite scary. We had a hard enough time walking in snow, I can't imagine running from a bear in those conditions. And I had the snacks in my pack.
